Everything about this name is delicious and mouth-watering. This brown butter frosting has the perfect balance between sweet and salty. Browning the butter adds a lot of flavor to this recipe. This easy and flavorful cream cheese frosting can be used for icing a cake, cinnamon buns, and cookies.
What Is Brown Butter
- Browning butter is a process in which butter is heated to the point that all of its water content is evaporated, and the fat in the milk content starts to cook and become brown. When butter is cooked a little past the melting point, results in the milk solids in the butter solidify and create a nutty aroma
About This Recipe
- This recipe has a few simple ingredients, that you don't have to be a baker to have in your pantry. There is only butter, cream cheese, and powdered sugar that need to come together to create this delicious frosting.
- We start with browning the butter. This is a process that only takes about a few minutes, however, turns the butter into a very flavorful, and delicious ingredient. Brown butter adds a nutty, toasty, and warm flavor to baked goods such as cookies, cakes, and frostings.
- Cream cheese is another component for this brown butter frosting. Cream cheese adds fat and a bit of salty-sour taste to the recipe. This will offset the sweetness of powdered sugar.
- Another important ingredient is butter. Adding butter gives stability to the frosting, this is very important if you are going to frost a cake with this recipe.
- We need to loosen up this creamy- buttery frosting, and that's when we need a few tablespoons of heavy cream or milk. If you add heavy cream, the result will become richer in texture and consistency vs milk which is thinner and contains less fat.
- And there is powdered sugar to sweeten the frosting. When it comes to sugar, I am always a bit hesitant to dump 5-6 cups of powdered sugar into the rest of the ingredients. For this frosting, start with adding 2 cups first, then taste it and if it needs more sweetness, add a bit more, and so on.
- A little bit of vanilla extract is always a good idea.

How To Make The Brown Butter Frosting
- Brown The Butter: Place the butter in a saucepan, melt and bring to a boil. First butter will look foamy, then it starts to become golden. Keep boiling the butter until it starts forming small brown pieces at the bottom of the pan. That is the fat content of the butter that is browning. At this point, the butter has a deep toasty, and caramelized aroma. You can't have this flavor with just regular butter. Set the brown butter aside to cool down, and reach room temperature.
- Cream the Cream cheese: Set the stand mixer on the whisk attachment, and cream the cream cheese until smooth and fluffy. Add the brown butter to the cream cheese and whist until well incorporated and light in color.
- Add The Powdered Sugar: Take one cup of sifted powdered sugar, and add it to the butter mixture by the spoonful. Take another cup of sugar and keep adding it to the mixture. Tase the mixture to make sure it has the desired sweetness. Add more sugar if you like.
- Add The Heavy Cream: To make the mixture smooth and silky, add 1-2 tablespoons of heavy cream and mix. If the mixture is dry add one at a time to reach a spreadable consistency. Add the vanilla and mix.
