These delicious Crackle Spice Cookies are loaded with Fall flavors and make the perfect treat for back to school. They make a great lunch box snack!! These cookies are more on the crunchy side than chewy.
About This Recipe
- These Crackle Spice Cookies use no fancy ingredients. Every item is simple and I am sure you have them in your pantry 🙂
- This recipe uses half a cup of vegetable shortening, however, if you do not want to use shortening, substitute it with coconut oil.
- A little bit about shortening: Cookies made with shortening have a crumbly texture and domed shape because the shortening prevents the cookies from spreading. Comparatively, cookies made with butter are crispier, flatter, and, butterier in flavor whereas shortening has no distinct flavor.
- For more additional flavor these cookies contain almond extract and lemon zest.
- This Crackle Spice Cookie recipe uses Cream of Tartar which creates that beautiful cracked shape. Cream of tartar acts as a Leavening Agent which makes your cookies or any baked goods fluffier.
- The delicious aroma in these cookies is coming from the warm Fall spice, Get the recipe from this post, Spice Blends
How To Make These Crackle Spice Cookies
- Rub the lemon zest into the granulated sugar with your clean fingertips. This releases the aroma out of the lemon zest.
- Both butter and shortening should be at room temperature. Cream them both with both sugars and mix well for about 5 minutes. Take your time with this stage.
- Add the eggs and extracts. Mix well.
- Whisk all the dry ingredients and gradually add to the above mixture.
- Scoop the dough into small balls and roll them into granulated sugar. Place them on the lined baking sheet, and bake.
