The caramel sauce has a few simple ingredients, however, what makes a good caramel sauce is the right ratio of ingredients as well as some patience.
Ingredients
- The main ingredient is granulated Sugar, which is cooked to the point that is browned and caramelized.
- Water is the other component that liquefies the sugar and prevents it from crystallization.
- What makes the caramel sauce so creamy and rich is the Butter. Butter adds flavor, fat, and smoothness to the sauce.
- Heavy Cream is the other fatty component of this delicious sauce. Heavy cream also plays a big role in creating smooth and creamy caramel sauce.
- What is any baking item without some Vanilla extract and Salt? We add vanilla extract for the aroma and salt to bring all those flours out and create a harmonious taste!
How To Make Caramel Sauce
- Add the water to the sugar in a saucepan. Do not stir the mixture, and only swirl the pan to cover the sugar with the water.
- Place the pan on medium to high heat and let the sugar cook. It will start to bubble. If the mixture starts to crystalize, do not panic. Wet a baking brush and run it around the edge of the sugar. This will add a little bit of water to the mixture and prevents sugar crystals from forming. See the below pictures.
- Mixture will start to change color, from a soft yellow to an amber color. Once the mixture has a honey color, keep an eye on it, because from this stage forward, it will burn very easily.
- Remove the pan from the heat and add the cubed butter, and whisk vigorously. The mixture will foam up and change color to caramel color. The darker the color of the sugar, the dipper the caramel color will be.
- Put the pan back on medium heat and add the cream, vanilla, and salt. Mi and let the caramel cook for another 2-3 minutes. See the below pictures.
